13. Should I talk to the police if I'm innocent?
A: No. Even if you're completely innocent, you should never speak to police without an attorney present. Anything you say can and will be used against you. Police are trained interrogators, and innocent people often inadvertently say things that hurt their defense. Exercise your Fifth Amendment right to remain silent and request an attorney immediately.
14. What's the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor?
A: Felonies are serious crimes punishable by more than one year in prison (typically state prison). Misdemeanors are less serious crimes punishable by up to one year in jail (typically county jail). Felony convictions have more severe long-term consequences including loss of voting rights, firearm rights, and professional licenses.
15. How much is my personal injury case worth?
A: Case value depends on severity of injuries, medical expenses (past and future), lost wages and earning capacity, pain and suffering, permanent disability or disfigurement, fault determination, insurance policy limits, and quality of evidence. We provide thorough case evaluations during free consultations.
16. Should I accept the insurance company's settlement offer?
A: No! Initial settlement offers are almost always far below fair value. Insurance companies make low offers hoping you'll accept before understanding the full extent of your injuries, discovering future medical complications, calculating lost earning capacity, or consulting with an attorney who will fight for you. Never accept an offer without having us review it.
17. Should I refuse a breathalyzer test?
A: This is a complicated decision. Maryland has an "implied consent" law—by driving, you've consented to chemical testing. Refusing results in automatic license suspension and can be used against you at trial. However, refusal means less evidence for prosecution. The best choice depends on your specific circumstances. Generally, if you're clearly intoxicated, refusal may help your case. If you're barely over the limit, taking the test might be better.
18. When should I hire a business attorney?
A: Before forming your business. Early legal guidance ensures proper entity selection and formation, prevents costly mistakes, establishes proper legal foundation, protects personal assets, and addresses tax and liability issues upfront. However, it's never too late to get legal help. Contact us regardless of your business stage.
19. Can you serve as our general counsel?
A: Yes. We provide ongoing general counsel services to businesses, serving as your legal department at a fraction of the cost of hiring in-house counsel. Services include contract review, legal advice, compliance guidance, and representation in disputes.
20. How can you help with international business transactions?
A: We assist with international contracts and agreements, import/export compliance, foreign business entity formation, cross-border transactions, international trade regulations, and international partnership agreements. Attorney Lawrence has specific experience with international business transactions.
21. How quickly will you respond to my inquiry?
A: We typically respond to phone messages and emails within 24 hours on business days. For emergencies (criminal arrests, protective orders), we respond immediately.
22. What if my immigration application is denied?
A: Depending on the type of denial and the reason, options may include filing a motion to reopen or reconsider, appealing to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), filing a new application with additional evidence, or exploring alternative immigration options. We'll evaluate your specific situation and recommend the best course of action.
23. Can you help if I'm in removal (deportation) proceedings?
A: Yes. Removal defense is a critical area of our practice. We represent clients in Immigration Court and before the Board of Immigration Appeals, exploring all available relief options including asylum, cancellation of removal, adjustment of status, and waivers.
24. Do you do virtual consultations?
A: Yes, we offer phone and video consultations for clients who cannot visit our offices in person.
